Would you like to talk about Math? About High School problems? About news in Computer Science area? About international projects? Advertising? I am ready!
Dr. Bronislovas Burgis, Kaunas, Lithuania

Robertas, Sausio 22 22:33  #

Burgis, Sausio 23 09:04  #

Robertas: no, there is no need to advertise my site so far but I would be happy to advertise something on my site…

I would like to talk about education. Share your opinions not in even lithuanian’s but also other in others countries education system, it’s control, teachers, etc. Try to find the best way to pupils luck. I’m waiting for you suggestions.

study, Vasario 16 20:34  #

I study in one Lithuania university and think that some math programs which must sudents to learn is to hard and where are a some information what I think isnt very importatn to our further study so that you think about what and still do you know how much math program differ from foreign university math.

Burgis, Vasario 16 20:54  #

study: some remarks: math at our universities is Russian style math and it means – good math. Of course, there are some universities in the world (like MIT) where the level is higher but I have had an opportunity (10 years ago) to check the math at one department of University of Manchester – it was terrible!
So, it depends…
It can not be too much math, anyway!

I’m glad to see that there are some really good and innovative lecturers in Lithuania. Keep it up! I’d like to ask your opinion about the quality of economics studies in Lithuania. Would I get competitive skills in international arena?

Sveiki,
It is a good question…

O to pasėkoje: vieni juda s(t) = a – t, o kiti – d(t) = a + t kreivėmis (kuo toliau, tuo labiau didėja tarp jų atstumas).

Mr B.Burgis, do you have a life motto? What are your goals for the future?
Have you ever been defeated by anyone in mathematics or in any other academic district? If yes, than please tell me how you handle your defeats?

Burgis, Vasario 22 23:15  #

Motto – work and love! Goals: to be a master of my own life until the last second of it. Defeated? No! I only was disapointed after I graduated from the university – just I found out that acquired no experience to work. Luckily, I was prepared to change the way of life.

A.V.M.B., Vasario 23 23:11  #

How can you realy enjoy your victoryes when you have never been defeated? i think a person can’t feel the real taste of triumph withuot feeling bitterness first.
what do you think about the phrase “akys-sielos veidrodis“ (i thought that it woun’t be appropriate to wright that phrase in english)? what do you ussualy try to envisage, when you look someone in the eye?

Burgis, Vasario 23 23:43  #

A.V.M.B., Vasario 24 00:13  #

and what is special for you??? i think that in a way every conversation and every look towards other person is special…
I always wanted to ask something, you told me that i’m a strange person, was that an insult or a compliment?

vvv, Vasario 28 09:57  #

To be strange means to be different. Tulip in the bouquet of roses will look strange in the same way as the rose in the bouquet of tulips. It‘s wonderful, that one can meet something strange, because field full of different flowers is always more interesting, then a football field.
On the other hand, “strange” means “foreign” (different and unknown at the same time). But everybody has possibility to explore things and people, what are unknown. This makes life even more interesting.

A.B., Kovo 7 18:09  #

what do you think about Freuds theory that every action we make because of sexual attraction…? :D

vvv, Kovo 8 18:51  #

To A.B. : what do you mean by „every action“? e.g. writing is the action, executed by me now. I don’t think, that it is somehow related to sexual attraction.

A.B., Kovo 8 20:51  #

that’s the main point, i don’t understand this either and i thought that you could explane this theory more clearly… :)))

A.B., Kovo 8 20:54  #

one more question:) i’ve read that men are more attracted to women that have long hair , but i didn’t find an explanation why is that..? :D

vvv, Kovo 12 21:32  #

I can try to explain everything, what is based on my own experience. Sorry, but I am not an expert in the theory of psyhology.

Mr. A, Gruodžio 11 12:25  #

Hello Mr. Burgis,
I live in Lithuania, because my wife is from this country. I want to ask question about math and chemistry education in Lithuania. I think that is very high lever. Because, for example, in Spain, where I used to live, math science much simple. For example, I have some friends in KTU university, they are learning maths… And that math is hard. You know, my speciality is Bussiness ethics and maganement, but I also learned math. And it wasn’t such a difficult thing. You must be very proud, that your students could learn such difficulties. It is useful for coutnry science development. :) Also, I heard that you are very interesting person in KTU. For example, if the students are too lazy for studies, you write them „5 by the funeral“. It is very funny.

Anyway, sorry for my english, because this is not my first language. Also, I wish you all the best, and hope that your students by the years will be better and better.

Burgis, Gruodžio 11 13:14  #

Dear Mr.A: thank you for your kind message. I would be glad to meet you one day…

Matrix, Sausio 9 17:59  #

Dear Mr Burgis,
Just one remark regarding your text in English (which is not too bad in general, considering your speciality): correctly, MATHS should be spelt this way (in plural), as it is an abreviation of Mathematics. It should also begin with a Capital letter.
Good luck with Maths, English and not-so-stupid students!
Yours sincerely,
Ms Matrix

Burgis, Sausio 9 19:46  #

‘In English, however, the noun mathematics takes singular verb forms. It is often shortened to math in English-speaking North America and maths elsewhere.’
(From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics#cite_note-7)
But thank you, Ms Matrix, I will keep it in my mind.

Ramūnas, Sausio 14 14:46  #

Thank you for your simplicity and being friendly with students. I read your book „niekam tikusi matematikos knyga“ and I can say – it really rocks, because there are great examples of solving problems.

Ramunas, Vilnius.

Julie, Spalio 7 01:40  #

I would like to come back to the Maths. I have some experience and, for example, in Germany at Gymnasium Year 10 they do study derivatives (I hope I’ve got the name right) but they study one topic for much longer then we do in Lithuania. It is also interesting that there students must learn to use scientific calculator and it is even a part of an exam with tasks involving the usage of one.
If you could, Mr. Burgis, would you chage the school system in Lithuania and/or at least the Maths programme that is being taught?

Well, I think that KTUG is really a merit. Although I haven’t studied there but I had a chance to know some students as well as teachers from there. And I’m glad I had a chance. Finally, „lapkritines“ is a great idea nad great event. Keep going!

Burgis, Spalio 7 10:21  #

Thank you Julie!
Yes, I would change many things at school, including Math. It’s not fair to study which angle is right angle when you are 10…
Scientific calculator is old-fashioned device, there is no need to study it, much better is to study Excel or any other scientific software.
Good luck!

Ich, Spalio 13 22:00  #

Even though I find your blog (sorry if I’m wrong about the way you meant it to be called) quite reliable and even worth-reading, I do disagree with your opinion about liberal arts and their significance to the public life. I certainly believe that both excat sciences and the humanities can perfectly be accepted by various gruops of the society in order to improve our daily lives as well as satisfy that enormous desire of cognition.
Yours sincerely,
Aurelija

Raimondas, Liepos 4 19:51  #

I am a masters’s student at maths faculty in VU and I must disagree with some people saying that the math taught at school or university is too complicated. I think it’s quite the contrary, and getting even worse, especially in the field of secondary education. My guess is that the main problem is with the will and responsibility of students. There being not enough money to hire assistants who would constantly check homework making it necessary for students to study hard all the semester lets them leave the major part of the course till the last days of the semester or the exam session. Thus the knowledge and skills required are not aquired and gaps in the education appear. After some time things otherwise easy start to look very complicated and the gaps widen. And then start the talks about the courses being invincible.
So I encourage everyone to ask him/herself this question before writing such things: did I really study hard enough from the beginning?
