I am a masters's student at maths faculty in VU and I must disagree with some people saying that the math taught at school or university is too complicated. I think it's quite the contrary, and getting even worse, especially in the field of secondary education. My guess is that the main problem is with the will and responsibility of students. There being not enough money to hire assistants who would constantly check homework making it necessary for students to study hard all the semester lets them leave the major part of the course till the last days of the semester or the exam session. Thus the knowledge and skills required are not aquired and gaps in the education appear. After some time things otherwise easy start to look very complicated and the gaps widen. And then start the talks about the courses being invincible.
So I encourage everyone to ask him/herself this question before writing such things: did I really study hard enough from the beginning?

Even though I find your blog (sorry if I'm wrong about the way you meant it to be called) quite reliable and even worth-reading, I do disagree with your opinion about liberal arts and their significance to the public life. I certainly believe that both excat sciences and the humanities can perfectly be accepted by various gruops of the society in order to improve our daily lives as well as satisfy that enormous desire of cognition.
Yours sincerely,
Aurelija

Thank you Julie!
Yes, I would change many things at school, including Math. It's not fair to study which angle is right angle when you are 10...
Scientific calculator is old-fashioned device, there is no need to study it, much better is to study Excel or any other scientific software.
Good luck!

I would like to come back to the Maths. I have some experience and, for example, in Germany at Gymnasium Year 10 they do study derivatives (I hope I've got the name right) but they study one topic for much longer then we do in Lithuania. It is also interesting that there students must learn to use scientific calculator and it is even a part of an exam with tasks involving the usage of one.
If you could, Mr. Burgis, would you chage the school system in Lithuania and/or at least the Maths programme that is being taught?

Well, I think that KTUG is really a merit. Although I haven't studied there but I had a chance to know some students as well as teachers from there. And I'm glad I had a chance. Finally, "lapkritines" is a great idea nad great event. Keep going!

Thank you for your simplicity and being friendly with students. I read your book "niekam tikusi matematikos knyga" and I can say - it really rocks, because there are great examples of solving problems.

'In English, however, the noun mathematics takes singular verb forms. It is often shortened to math in English-speaking North America and maths elsewhere.'
(From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics#cite_note-7)
But thank you, Ms Matrix, I will keep it in my mind.

Dear Mr Burgis,
Just one remark regarding your text in English (which is not too bad in general, considering your speciality): correctly, MATHS should be spelt this way (in plural), as it is an abreviation of Mathematics. It should also begin with a Capital letter.
Good luck with Maths, English and not-so-stupid students!
Yours sincerely,
Ms Matrix

Hello Mr. Burgis,
I live in Lithuania, because my wife is from this country. I want to ask question about math and chemistry education in Lithuania. I think that is very high lever. Because, for example, in Spain, where I used to live, math science much simple. For example, I have some friends in KTU university, they are learning maths... And that math is hard. You know, my speciality is Bussiness ethics and maganement, but I also learned math. And it wasn't such a difficult thing. You must be very proud, that your students could learn such difficulties. It is useful for coutnry science development. :) Also, I heard that you are very interesting person in KTU. For example, if the students are too lazy for studies, you write them "5 by the funeral". It is very funny.

Anyway, sorry for my english, because this is not my first language. Also, I wish you all the best, and hope that your students by the years will be better and better.
